SCOTT: Building Trust in the Internet of Things

Building user trust will be a real competitive advantage for technologies, products and services in the IoT market. To realize the full potential of the Internet of Things (IoT) we need to build trust in wireless solutions and increase their social acceptance.

SCOTT, a European Research project for “SECURE CONNECTED TRUSTABLE THINGS”, is an ambitious R&D project of 57 industry and research partners from 11 European countries, plus Brazil. SCOTT brings together key players from several industrial and user domains including construction, the automotive industry, aeronautics, rail and healthcare, strengthening Europe’s position in the emerging world of the IoT.

SCOTT does not just deal with 'things that are connected', but with 'trustable things that securely communicate', i.e. things interconnected by secure and dependable wireless technology and valuing the end-users' privacy rules.

Innovative Solutions

SCOTT provides comprehensive cost-efficient solutions of wireless, end-to-end secure, trustworthy connectivity and interoperability to bridge the last mile to market implementation. SCOTT does not deal with just “things that are connected”, but “trustable things that are connected”, i.e. things interconnected by dependable wireless technology and valuing the end-users‘ security and privacy rules. SCOTT focuses on wireless sensor and actuator networks and communication in the areas of mobility, building & home / smart infrastructure, as well as health. This addresses numerous European societal challenges such as smart, green and integrated transport, secure and inclusive societies, as well as health and wellbeing.

By providing reference implementations, SCOTT aims to establish an eco-system for trustable wireless solutions and services for both professional and private users by attracting 3rd parties and particularly SMEs. This together with the involvement of open innovation approaches and stakeholder engagement, as well as close cooperation with cluster organizations all over Europe, will further boost and exploit the growing “Internet economy”. SCOTT has created a comprehensive, dedicated Trusted System Development Framework and applied it to all its use cases to significantly foster acceptance of SCOTT solutions on the market.

Worldwide uptake of “European Technology”

SCOTT facilitates the worldwide uptake of “European Technology” and infrastructure with the goal of earning an international reputation for secure, smart, and privacy-aware wireless solutions. SCOTT strengthens Europe’s IoT industry by demonstrating wireless solutions which allow third parties – in particular startup companies – to develop IoT applications faster in an open innovation-based approach to increase societal benefits. In this context, the future Horizon Europe and Digital Europe will be important platforms to further strengthen this reputation. SCOTT responds to the urgent need in enhancing the long-term ability of the European industry to successfully compete with major IoT players from the USA and Asia.
